Overview

Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute's Department of Orthopaedics offers specialized care for all musculoskeletal conditions through inpatient and day care surgery, rehabilitation including physiotherapy, orthotics, and prosthetics. We offer a knowledgeable team of consultants with experience in a variety of orthopaedic subspecialties with top-notch support from the departments of pathology, microbiology and  physiotherapy. All types of spine surgeries whether primary, complex, revisions for failed spine surgeries and spinal deformity correction surgeries forms part of routine surgical work. Specialized surgeries including joint replacements, arthroscopic surgeries, hand surgeries, paediatric orthopaedic sugeries and limb reconstruction surgeries are also offered by a dedicated team of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Through the implementation of rural health camps, the department has brought special services to the doorsteps of the underprivileged and oppressed. At the campsite, medicines are available for minor ailments. Patients with Major diseases are referred to the hospital for further evaluation and management.

Our Services

Outpatient Services 

The Department of Orthopaedics, being a tertiary care centre, functioning for the past 18 years, receives a variety of challenging cases, in all the field of orthopeadics. The patients attending the out patient services are subjected to detailed evalution and appropriate investigations to arrive at the diagnosis and the required treatment is administered.

Trauma

Polytrauma patients presenting to our emergency department are immediately attended to by a team of surgeons with specialized services(plastic surgery, neuro surgery,vascular surgery, etc ) being available throughout the day. Patients are triaged and managed according to the severity of their injury. The trauma victims are taken up immediately for emergency surgery when the need arises. Injuries which do not require hospitalization are treated as outpatient and followed up in the outpatient services of the department.

Spine

The spine surgery services headed by a senior orthopaedic spine surgeon, manages efficiently all types of spinal disorders like degenerative spinal disorders, spinal infections, tumors of the spine and spinal deformities. The available specialized supportive equipments like microscope help in performance of safe spine surgrey. The hallmark of the spine surgery services is the specialized management of complex deformity surgeries 

Arthroscopy

The arthroscopic surgeries are performed with the state of the art  equipments on the knee, shoulder, ankle, wrist  and hip joints managing various ailments of these regions through minimal access. Both diagnostic and theraputic arthroscopic surgeries are offered regularly.

Joint Replacement Surgery

Our team of committed and well trained orthopaedic  joint replacement surgeons perform both primary and revision arthroplasty procedures on the hip, knee and shoulder regularly. Post  surgical rehablitation facilites which are available in the department ensures good outcome for the patients who attend the joint replacement sevices.

Paediatric Orthopaedics

Children attending the department with various orthopaedic ailments are efficiently managed by orthopaedic surgeons who have been trained to mange these conditions appropriately, with compassion.

Hand Surgery

Hand surgery services which is slowly evolving as a seperate speciality, is offered in the department by internationally trained specialists. Mutilating hand injuries are well reconstructed by the team of available hand surgeons in the department.

Inpatient Services

The Orthopaedic department with 200 beds functions with five orthopaedic units headed by senior Orthopaedic Professors.  The best possible inpatient care is being offered, utilizing the team consisting of Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, senior and junior residents. The orthopaedic wards are well equipped to cater to the needs of the patients admitted. Special wards are offered based on the needs and preferance of the admitted patients. Patients requiring specialized (post-operative/ polytrauma) care are lodged in the intensive postoperative wards and intensive care units(ICU) when-ever needed. The paramedical staff including staff nurses and ward attenders ensure quality care to the patients admitted in the wards.
